The Barbados Citizens’ Contingent Committee was formed about the end of November 1915, and the original promoters of the movement were Messrs Dudley G Leacock, FAC Collymore and RG Cave.

The primary object of the Committee was to enable your men of respectable parentage to proceed to England to join His Majesty’s Forces – either the Royal Navy or English fighting regiments, and thus to take their part in the Great War.

With this object in mind in view the committee opened a fund, and issued a general appeal to the public, asking for subscriptions. The public responded readily and generously, subscribing in all £3044 12s 10d. This amount was used to defray the expenses of fitting out the men before departure, paying passages to England, expenses there before joining their regiments and other incidentals, and later – at the close of the War – the upkeep of men in London after discharged from the army, while awaiting the departure of the steamers to bring them back to Barbados. In this connection it may be mentioned that it may be necessary to appeal for further small subscriptions for this latter purpose. A full account of the receipts and expenditure was audited by Messrs Bovell and Skeet and published in the public press from time to time.

The medical examinations of the men were kindly undertaken by a medical board consisting of doctors Johnson, Manning and Parris, who readily render gratuitous service, and reported through the secretary to the committee.

A semi-official valedictory service at St Michael’s Cathedral was accorded the first two contingents which left Barbados in the 31st December 1915 and 5th April 1916, under the charge of Messrs H Packer Bailey and CC Bynoe respectively.

The other contingents, through the courtesy of reverend WG Murray, Vicar of St Mary’s and chaplain to the volunteer forces, were able to attend divine service (especially held for them by the vicar) at St Mary’s Church on the Sundays just prior to their departure. Whenever requested the Barbados government very kindly placed the Government water boat at the disposal of the committee, to take the men and their baggage from shore to the steamer. The contingents were invariably given a hearty send off by their friends and well-wishers, many of whom, along with members of the committee, accompanied the men to the steamer.

On arrival of the men in London, they were received by Mr AE Aspinall of the West India Committee, who put them in touch with various recruiting centres, and assisted them in joining their respective regiments. Special reference must be made to Mr Aspinall, to whom a large tribute of praise is due for all the trouble taken by him with the men sent over from Barbados, and for his ready help and sympathy extended to them on all occasions.

I have enjoyed reading your research on Barbadians in the First World War. Lawrence T Yearwood is my great Uncle. I would love to know where he was in Flanders, and why he appears to have been demobbed so late 1920s. He was made an MBE in 1934.

  4. I am developing a course here in Canada on various groups who came to the war that are normally never discussed. This is an interesting addition for my research.
